Why the Written Record Matters.
What Pendulia offers is not merely a service — it is a documented account of a mechanical object's condition, treatment, and outcome. That record has value.
← Back to HomepageSix Reasons Customers Return
Written Diagnosis on Every Job
The bench report is produced for every intake, regardless of the work elected. It records movement condition, timing deviation, and any visible wear. It belongs to the customer.
- Photographed condition note included
- Tiered estimate for each work path
- Report issued whether work proceeds or not
Electronic Timing Measurement
Rate measurements are taken on a witschi timing machine in at least five positions. The numerical results appear in the diagnosis report. No estimates — stated deviations only.
- Five-position measurement protocol
- Pre-service and post-service readings
- Numbers recorded in service document
Ultrasonic Cleaning as Standard
All disassembled movement components pass through ultrasonic cleaning before any lubrication is applied. This is not an optional upgrade — it is the standard procedure for every complete service.
- Full train and escapement cleaning
- Solution changed on schedule
- Included in service cost, not added separately
Customer Controls the Scope
No work proceeds beyond bench diagnosis without the customer's written approval. The tiered estimate from the diagnosis stage makes the cost of each path clear before commitment.
- Written approval before each work stage
- Three options on dial condition assessment
- No surprise costs at collection
Lubrication by Specification
Lubricant selection varies by calibre age, train location, and manufacturer data where available. Application quantities are measured, not estimated by eye.
- Lubricant matched to movement type
- Measured application at each point
- Lubricant type noted in service record
Established Dial Specialist
Dial restoration work is referred to a conservation specialist with whom Pendulia has maintained a working relationship since 2014. The relationship, the process, and the pricing are disclosed at assessment.
- Long-term verified specialist relationship
- Reversible conservation option available
- Customer chooses restoration approach
What Each Benefit Means in Practice
Swiss-Trained Watchmaking
The principal watchmaker trained in Zurich between 2004 and 2007. The curriculum covered full disassembly and reassembly of ebauche movements, escapement adjustment, regulation theory, and case preparation. The practical standard required was workshop-deployable, not academic.
That training shapes the sequence used at the Pendulia bench: measure first, record, clean, lubricate to specification, measure again, record again. It is a method, not a checklist.
Expertise Indicators
- Formal watchmaking training, Zurich 2004–2007
- 14 years operating at the Georgetown bench
- Swiss and Japanese calibre technical documentation on file
- Dial conservation partner relationship since 2014
- Scope limited to competencies that can be verified in writing
Equipment at the Bench
- Witschi Analyzer — electronic timing measurement
- Ultrasonic cleaner — full train component cleaning
- Static pressure tester — case water resistance check
- Leica stereo microscope — movement inspection at magnification
- Documented lubrication system — measured application volumes
Instruments, Not Estimation
The witschi timing machine removes ambiguity from rate assessment. A movement that appears to keep time adequately by wrist observation may show a 35-second daily deviation in dial-up position. That number matters for the regulation step — and for the customer's understanding of what the service achieved.
The static pressure check on the reassembled case similarly converts a subjective impression into a number. Both readings appear in the service document.
Clear Communication at Each Stage
The intake process is structured. The watchmaker examines the piece at the counter, records the condition note, and produces a written estimate before the watch is placed on the bench queue. The customer approves the diagnosis fee; the work begins.
When further work is required beyond the original scope — a mainspring found worn during disassembly, for example — the customer is contacted before the part is sourced. No additions are made to the job without approval.
Customer Communication Points
- Condition note at intake (same day)
- Written estimate issued with diagnosis report
- Contact before any scope change
- Service report at collection
- Workshop responds to enquiries within one business day
Pricing Structure
- RM 750 bench diagnosis — credited against further work
- RM 1,950 complete automatic service — all standard consumables included
- RM 4,280 dial restoration — full specialist work, customer selects path
- No hidden additions — any scope change requires written approval
Transparent Pricing, No Post-Invoice Adjustments
Pendulia's pricing is set out before work begins. The diagnosis fee of RM 750 is the only cost incurred unless the customer elects further service. That fee is credited in full against any subsequent invoice. The written report and photographs have value independent of the next decision.
Pricing for the complete service and dial restoration reflects the actual cost of the work — the cleaning, lubrication, parts, and specialist referral — not a market-anchored estimate. Both are stated figures, not starting points.
Pendulia vs. Typical Workshop Approaches
A factual account of how common watch service practices compare with the Pendulia approach. No specific workshop is named.
| Practice | Typical Workshop | Pendulia |
|---|---|---|
| Written condition report at intake | Verbal only | Written + photographed |
| Electronic timing measurement | Not always | Standard on all jobs |
| Ultrasonic cleaning included | Optional add-on | Included in service |
| Inspection fee credited to service | Rarely | Always credited |
| Customer approval before scope changes | Inconsistent | Written approval required |
| Dial restoration via specialist partner | Usually in-house or declined | Verified specialist, disclosed |
| Post-service timing results documented | Rarely issued | Included in service record |
What Sets Pendulia Apart
Defined and Declared Scope
Most workshops accept whatever arrives. Pendulia works within a stated scope — automatic three-hand calibres without complications in-house; complex movements assessed and referred; dial restoration via named specialist. The scope is available in writing on request. Customers know in advance what the workshop will and will not take on.
Ownership Record Value
The written diagnosis and service record that Pendulia produces is part of the ownership history of the watch. For pieces of significant value, this documentation can inform future service decisions and, in the context of resale, demonstrates a verifiable service history. This is a practical benefit independent of the service itself.
Tropical Climate Knowledge
Fourteen years of bench work in Penang's climate has produced specific observations about lubricant degradation rates in high-humidity conditions. The workshop's service interval recommendations reflect local conditions rather than manufacturer data calibrated for cooler, drier environments.
No Retail, No Authentication
Pendulia does not sell watches or parts, and does not issue authentication documents. This removes a class of commercial pressure that can compromise the independence of a workshop's assessments. The bench report describes what is found, not what a sale requires.

The First Step Is the Written Diagnosis.
Send the calibre reference and a description of what you are observing. The workshop will confirm whether the piece falls within scope and arrange an intake appointment.
